OSHA renews strategic partnership to reduce injuries in the electrical industry
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has renewed a strategic partnership originally formed in 2004 for the purpose of reducing injuries among linemen and electrical employees. The partnership consists of approximately 80% of the electrical transmission and distribution industry and includes ten of the largest American contractors, a labor union, and two trade organizations.
Since this partnership was established, there has been a significant decrease in on-the-job injuries and deaths among the partners’ nearly 26,000 employees. It has provided extensive training and developed and implemented best practices that address key industry hazards, such as conducting safety checks, using fall protection, and wearing insulated personal protective equipment (PPE).
"By working on common goals through the partnership, partner injury, illness, and fatality rates have been reduced," explained Dr. David Michaels, assistant secretary of labor for occupational safety and health. "Through this national partnership, the partner companies and associations looked at factors causing fatal incidents and other serious injuries and implemented changes to reduce and prevent the number of fatalities not only within their own companies, but in the industry as a whole. We look forward to seeing even greater outcomes of this partnership in the future."
With the proper training and equipment, electrical workers can safeguard themselves against hazards and improve workplace safety. Help reduce injuries during electrical tasks by providing electrical safety supplies and insulated tools, and PPE, including lineman gloves or work gloves.
