UPS applies additional charges for special handling in response to safety regulations instituted by the US Department of Transportation's Office of Hazardous Materials Safety (OHM).
OHM's mission is to minimize the risks to life and property inherent in the commercial transportation of hazardous materials. In that capacity, special handling is required of different classes of hazardous and dangerous materials. Special packaging is also required and must provide a description and classification, together with unique markings and labels for the contents of packages.
Hazardous material classes include:
- Class 1 – Explosives
- Class 2 – Gases
- Class 3 – Flammable Liquids
- Class 4 – Flammable Solids
- Class 5 – Oxidizers and Organic Peroxides
- Class 6 – Poisons and Pathogens
- Class 7 – Radioactive Materials
- Class 8 – Corrosives
- Class 9 – Miscellaneous Hazardous Materials
- ORM-D – Other Regulated Materials
