Safety Sign Components & Materials:
Headers:
Headers contain a specific "signal" word or words to designate a degree or level of a safety alert, and is always located in the uppermost portion of the sign. The header is intended to capture and direct attention to the potential hazardous situation.

Header Markings:
- Danger headers alert workers to an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. This signal word is to be limited to the most extreme situations and should not be used for property damage hazards unless personal injury risk appropriate to the level is also involved.
- Warning communicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. This signal word should not be used for property damage hazards unless personal injury risk appropriate to this level is also involved.
- Caution advises personnel of a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury. It may also be used to alert against unsafe practices that may cause property damage.
- Notice informs workers of a statement of company policy directly or indirectly related to the safety of personnel or protection of property. This signal word should not be associated directly with a hazard or hazardous situation.
- Emergency, Safety First, and Think headers provide general instructions relative to safe work practices, reminds of proper safety procedures, and indicates the location of safety equipment.
Legends and Symbols:
Legends and symbols are located below the header "signal" word or words and help communicate the danger, caution, warning, or notice associated with the alert.

Legends and Symbols:
- Legends appear below the header and define the specific hazard or required behavior to help avoid a hazard.
- Symbols are pictures or graphic images designed to be compatible with and supportive of the legend so any alert is quickly and clearly conveyed. Many symbols are universal in design and standardized to be easily understood.

Standards and Regulations:
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.145 provides specifications for general accident prevention signs and tags and 29 CFR 1926.200 outlines safety sign and tag regulations for the construction industry.
Hazard communication standards for toxic and hazardous substances, and construction (29 CFR 1926.59) are provided by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200.
OSHA standards must be complied with and severe penalties can be imposed for failing to meet those standards. ANSI accident prevention safety sign standards should be followed to ensure worker safety in the absence of OSHA requirements. Depending on your location and industry, there may also be additional federal, state, or local code requirements that need to be followed to ensure complete compliance.
