Go Green…It's Easy & Effective
There are a variety of ways to “Go Green” and help preserve our environment. They’re quick and easy, and have a positive impact. Small changes make huge differences. Not only can they help the environment, but they can also save you money. Here are a few ways to get started:
- Set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few
degrees higher in the summer
- Unplug appliances when you’re not using them
- Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible. Up to 85% of the
energy used to machine-wash clothes is spent heating water
- Take shorter showers to reduce water use
- Install a low-flow showerhead
- Bring your own mug to get coffee – paper cups increase waste
and take up landfill space
- Compost yard trimmings, as well as fruit and vegetable scraps
to reduce landfill space and help fertilize the soil
- Look for and purchase products that are made with recycled
materials
Throughout their lifetime, the average American will throw away 600 times the amount of his or her adult weight in garbage. Recycling is one of the easiest things you can do to reduce your impact. It helps conserve resources and energy, preserves landfill space, and supports a healthy environment.
Recycling programs vary depending on where you live and work. Here’s a list of some common items that can be recycled:
- Aluminum cans, including soda cans, food cans, and empty aerosol cans
- Steel cans, such as those that contain juice, vegetables, or other food
- Plastic beverage containers–such as empty soda bottles, water bottles, and milk containers–and their caps
- Plastic bags from your bread, dry cleaning, and newspapers, as well as the plastic wrap around things like paper towels can be recycled, usually in the same place you recycle plastic shopping bags
- Glass–except broken glass, light bulbs, mixed color glass, mirrors, windows, and cookware
- Newspaper
- Miscellaneous paper, including used copy paper, unwanted mail, old faxes, etc.
- Cardboard boxes–except those that have been contaminated with food, such as pizza boxes
–The bottom half of your pizza box isn’t recyclable…but the top of it is
(if there isn’t any grease on it)
–Toilet paper and paper towel cores are most often made of cardboard and
can be recycled
- Automotive products, including antifreeze, car batteries, motor oil, tires, and transmission fluid
