Recycling… You Can Make a Difference

Recycling is an easy way to reduce your carbon footprint and minimize your impact on the environment. No matter where you live, you can have a positive impact on the Earth, just by reducing the amount of waste you throw away. The items that are thrown away end up in landfills, and many of them can be recycled.

What Can be Recycled?
Recycling programs vary depending on where you live. Even if you don’t have a curbside pickup program, chances are, you have a recycling center nearby. Here’s a list of some common items that can be recycled:

  • Aluminum cans, including soda cans, food cans, empty aerosol cans
  • Steel cans, such as those that contain juice, vegetables, or other food
  • Plastic beverage containers, such as empty soda bottles, water bottles, and milk containers
  • Glass–except broken glass, light bulbs, mixed color glass, mirrors, windows, and cookware
  • Newspaper
  • Miscellaneous paper, including used copy paper, unwanted mail, old faxes, etc.
  • Cardboard boxes–except those that have been contaminated with food, such as pizza boxes
  • Automotive products, including antifreeze, car batteries, motor oil, tires, and transmission fluid

If you have an electronic item that’s still usable, consider donating it to a local charity. If it’s broken and unusable, it’s important to know that there are laws that prohibit throwing away computer monitors and a host of other electronic equipment. These items often contain substances that can be harmful if not disposed of properly. Some of the items that fall into this category are:

  • Answering machines
  • Cables
  • Camcorders
  • CD players
  • Cell phones
  • Cell phone batteries
  • Computers
  • Computer batteries
  • Fax machines
  • Keyboards
  • Laptops
  • Monitors
  • Mouse
  • Printers
  • PDAs
  • Remote Controls
  • Televisions

If you can’t find an electronics recycling center in your area, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has information on where you can recycle these items.
